Online surveys for money can’t really exist, right? I admit, it does sound hard to believe. That is until you know the back story. Then you will understand why advertisers will pay $25 – $75+ per survey.

Surveys – Scattershot

Completing online surveys for money is a relatively new marketing phenomenon. Advertisers have always tried to get feedback from consumers on the products they sell. In the “old days” they would try the “scattershot” approach by purchasing a mailing list and doing a massive bulk mailing to people’s mailboxes. They would hope that a certain percentage of people would take the time to fill out the questionnaire and mail it back to the company administering the survey. As you can imagine this could be extremely costly, especially since maybe 1% of people would actually return a correctly completed form.

Surveys – Telephone

Telephone surveys were the advertiser’s next attempt to get more reliable feedback from consumers at a cheaper cost. People who didn’t have phones might be experiencing financial hardship and not have the disposable income to purchase products. By targeting those who have phones you eliminate that group of individuals. And because most people are decent, it’s harder to abruptly hang-up on someone than it is to toss “junk mail” in the trash. It is also relatively cheap to pay a student or retiree minimum wage to make these phone calls.

Surveys – Face to Face

Wishing to get an even better targeted audience, advertisers started the idea of accosting unsuspecting visitors in department stores and malls. I’ll bet most people, while walking through a mall, have at least once been stopped by a college student carrying a clipboard asking if you would answer a “few” survey questions. Advertisers know that if you are in a mall or store that you probably make purchases, and therefore might have purchased one of their products. And again, because most people are uncomfortable being rude they are less likely to just “walk away” from the minimum wage interviewer.

Surveys – Receipts

Advertisers have found even better and cheaper ways to solicit responses from their customers. For example, many restaurants now randomly print out phone numbers or website address on customer’s bills where they can go to complete a survey. If the customer completes the survey within a set number of days they receive some reward such as a free dessert or appetizer on their next visit. The cost here is very low because you already have the prospective survey respondent sitting in your restaurant, and you know they use your product. Unfortunately for the advertiser, still only a small amount of people ever actually complete that survey within the time-limit.

Surveys – Small Incentives

Some companies have tried getting people to complete surveys in exchange for actual items such as toilet paper, room deodorizer, cleaning products, snack products, etc. This has had some limited success, but still not enough people were participating.
